New features

Hierarchical Pathfinding

Scalability is one of our core design principles. Our hierarchical pathfinding solution enables long-range concurrent pathfinding and following with hundreds of NPCs.

Hierarchical navigation builds increasingly sparse abstract representations of which parts of the game world are connected. This can be utilised to find paths much more quickly and with less memory usage across large maps, as well as supporting pathfinding across sparsely loaded maps.

AI Planning

Many behaviour tools commonly used in game AI, such as behaviour trees and state trees, are reactive. They have limited to no capability to reason how the action being taken now affects future decision-making and world states. This can lead to poor AI or the need for excessive behaviour trees and custom logic to handle all possible cases.

While deliberative systems, such as Goal-Oriented Action Planning and Hierarchical Task Networks, have made strides in this area, we’ve just released the more powerful and expressive evolution of AI planning for Game AI. It utilises a domain-independent AI Planning system capable of reasoning about numerals, enabling NPCS to track the number of items in their inventory and allowing game systems to manage resources, such as gold or energy, in real-time strategy games.

Looking forward...

Surface Navigation

Does your game have creatures that need to navigate walls and ceilings? Surface Navigation has got you covered! This highly popular feature was originally introduced in Kythera V1, and we’re excited to announce it will finally be coming to V2 in Q4 2025.

Watch our video for a glimpse of it in action in Kythera AI V2!
